Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my toilet keep refilling by itself at night?
This “ghost flushing” usually points to a worn outlet seal or a cracked flush valve seat allowing slow tank leakage. As the water level drops, the inlet valve opens to top up. Mineral scale, misaligned flappers and debris under seals are common causes.
Inspect the outlet seal for grooves, clean the seat, then set the water level to the manufacturer mark. If the inlet valve hisses or chatters, fit a new cartridge and check mains pressure with a gauge.
How do you access and repair toilet leaks in concealed or in-wall cisterns?
Concealed cisterns are accessed through the flush plate opening, which is designed for maintenance. Toilet repair technicians withdraw the outlet or inlet valve cartridges for service without removing tiles. Persistent toilet leaks may require replacing the canister or seals, then re-setting rod lengths and overflow height.
Always check for condensation issues inside the cavity and confirm that the flush pipe and pan connector are seated correctly. A short camera inspection can confirm there’s no hidden seepage into the wall space.
Can high water pressure cause toilet leaks or noisy refills?
Yes. Excessive mains pressure accelerates seal wear, makes inlet valves noisy and can cause periodic weeping from relief points. Use a pressure-limiting valve to keep static pressure around 500–600 kPa, as many valve manufacturers specify.
If hammering occurs when the cistern shuts off, add a mini arrester close to the inlet valve and secure pipework to reduce vibration. After pressure control, recheck fill times, reset water level and confirm the outlet seal holds for a full 10-minute test.
